Ideas Fund research partnership unveils inspiring mural

How do you visualise the findings of an innovative piece of community research collaboration? For one Ideas Fund-supported partnership between Hive Cancer Support and Ulster University the answer was a city centre mural highlighting the message ‘We Carry On.’

The project saw Hive members talking about their experiences with cancer and mental health with UU researchers. The mural, which was designed by Peaball Graffiti Collective, reflects their bravery and the lasting impact of cancer surgery.

Hive Project Manager Maureen Collins says:

“Taking part in this research project was a hugely emotional experience for our members who spoke in depth about their cancer surgery and it’s lasting impact. This mural, at the heart of our city, is a tribute to all cancer thrivers and reminds people Hive Cancer Support is here to help you carry on- whatever that looks like for you.”

Since 2021 DHC has been working with the NW Community Network (lead partner) and Ulster University to support the Ideas Fund, which is run by the British Science Association and funded by Wellcome. Over two rounds of funding this scheme has supported fifteen innovative community and researcher partnerships to the tune of £772k within the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.
