What we do

Our kitchens have never felt further from the source of our food. That's where Acorn Farm comes in.

Acorn Farm I Can Cook is all about what we eat and where we get it from. It is a healthy, sustainable cooking programme that teaches people skills that help them look after their own health and the health of the planet.

About Acorn Farm

Acorn Farm is a partnership project led by Derry City and Strabane District Council and Community Foundation NI that bridges the gap between food choices and the climate emergency, through local, fresh and seasonal food.

The exciting project will see the regeneration of a disused site into an urban food growing space, with a new gate lodge and wider environmental improvements. The focus of the farm is to develop a high-quality, urban food growing hub, a sustainable food event venue and an impressive visitor destination, supported by programmes that connect people back to the source of their food.

Acorn Farm I Can Grow, delivered by the Conservation Volunteers, supports people to grow more food in their own homes, while Acorn Farm Growing Challenges and Activities brings together local growing groups to tackle projects together and learn new skills.

Project Mission

Our Goals

Acorn Farm I Can Cook is all about what we eat and where we get it from.

Re-connect communities with the food on their plate

From the country of origin on our supermarket veg, to old tips and tricks for preserving food or cutting food waste, knowledge is power.

Spread skills to cook and eat well

Growing, cooking and eating – it’s the stuff of life. Skills for cooking healthily and sustainably are all around us, we just need to pay attention.

Cut our carbon footprint

Our modern food system comes with a major environmental cost. Eating more local, seasonal food helps sustain the planet that sustains us all.
