What we do

The Derry & Strabane Healthy City & District project, part of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) European Network of Healthy Cities, unites leaders from business, community, and public sectors to prioritise health on the local agenda. This initiative addresses the root causes of poor health and health inequalities, working collaboratively to create conditions where everyone can achieve their best possible health.

In 2022, Derry City & Strabane achieved WHO Healthy City designation for the third time. This ongoing commitment reinforces our vision of a community where health and wellbeing are at the core of daily life.

Our commitment

Being a Healthy City is a process not an outcome. WHO describes healthy cities as ones that are conscious of their current health status and striving to improve it, committed to health and putting structures and processes in place to achieve it, and continually improving its physical and social environment and community resources to enable people to support each other.

We bring together the cross-sector Healthy City and District Leadership Group to identify health challenges and instigate collaborative action.

Project Mission

Our Goals

The factors that influence our health are complex and multi-faceted. And complex issues need collaborative solutions.

Identify collaborative priorities

From diabetes to air quality to food system change, we identify local trends in public health and bring together people who can make a meaningful difference.

Make the case for change

As members of a global network, we draw on evidence and good practice from around the world to find solutions to the factors affecting health here.

Reduce health inequity in Derry and Strabane

We aim to reduce unfair and avoidable health inequities by paying attention to the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age.
