Sports Grants going strong in 10th year

The Sports Grant initiative, now in its 10th year, continues to highlight the incredible dedication of sports clubs in the Western Trust area, with 56 clubs submitting an application in 2024/25.

Funded by the Public Health Agency through the Clear project, this programme has become a cornerstone of community development by supporting clubs with funding and training to enhance both physical and mental wellbeing. Applications will now be assessed over the coming weeks.

Applications for this year's grants closed last week, with 56 sports groups submitting applications collectively valued at over £27,000. These clubs represent a wide range of sports, which include athletics, basketball and swimming.

An essential aspect of the Sports Grant Initiative is the training component. Nearly 200 coaches who are successful in securing funding will be expected to participate in programmes like safeTALK and Sport NI’s Level 1 Mental Health Awareness. This ensures that clubs are not only equipped with the physical resources they need but will also be empowered with knowledge to support their members’ mental health.

By emphasising the ‘Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing’ the programme continues to prioritise holistic development and inclusivity within sports.

As we await the announcement of successful applicants, this milestone year serves as a celebration of the collective effort and passion that has driven the programme’s success for a decade. We would like to extend our thanks to all the clubs that have participated, and we look forward to seeing the transformative impact this initiative will have in the year ahead.

Stay tuned for updates as we embark on another year of community growth and connection through the power of sports.
